FILM

Working with Whistler-based Heavy Hitting Films throughout the late 90’s, Chili was a key part of the award-winning action ski film “Parental Advisory.” In 2002, working with writer/director Feet Banks, Chili conceived and launched the Heavy Hitting B-Grade HorrorFest, a showcase of short, cheaply shot horror movies. In 2009 the HorrorFest played to a sold-out crowd of over 1000 people, making it the largest and longest running horror film festival in Western Canada as well as one of the most popular nights of the year on the Whistler event calendar.

“I like film because it allows you to capture the passing of time,” Chili says. “Much the same way I try to invoke a series of moments in my paintings.” “Film is a great mix of visuals, music, and ideas all blended into something you can showcase to hundreds or thousands of people at once. Watching an audience react to your films is very fulfilling.”

In 2005 The Whistler Stories Program awarded Chili and Banks a grant to produce “High In the Mountains” a 5-minute documentary in which Chili embarked on a 6-day painting and hiking trip in the BC backcountry, seeking solitude and inspiration amongst the majestic peaks of the Coast Mountains. The film sheds light on Chili’s artistic process and inspiration. You can pick up a free copy of High in the Mountains at the Chili Thom Gallery in Whistler.
